Carbon Emission Assessment of Construction Process Based on Discrete Event Simulation
The construction industry is suffering enormously from a series of recurring problems such as cost and time overruns, low productivity, poor safety, and quality, and high rate of waste generation, which decrease the value provided to the customer. To improve the productivity of construction processes and eliminate wastes, lean techniques have been widely applied to construction processes, such as just-in-time delivery. Many studies have found that lean construction principles could improve the performance of construction processes and reduce the inventory cost and time of the project. However, little attention has been given to environmental performance related to lean construction. Just-in-time strategy means frequent transportation, which will increase carbon emissions in the transportation stage. However, the onsite storage of materials will increase storage space and repetitive handling operations, which will increase the carbon emission of the construction site. Therefore, this study aims to explore the environmental impact of applying just-in-time strategy in construction processes using discrete-event simulation approach.
