Full-Scale Shallow Anchor Testing in High Moisture Content Fine-Grained Levee Soils
This paper focuses on shallow anchor testing performed with 3 anchor types at 0.3 and 0.6 m lengths. All anchor testing was performed in a high plasticity clay meeting New Orleans USACE District levee capping material requirements. The goal of the study was to determine the amount of reinforcement shallow anchors could provide for temporary geotextile levee armoring against overtopping and storm events. Average ultimate loads of three test replicates for each anchor type ranged from 145 to 155 kg for 0.3 m anchors and 280 to 360 kg for 0.6 m anchors. Anchor capacity could likely be increased by installing a plate to the front of the anchors to increase the soil bearing area. Results showed shallow anchors can provide some stability to a levee protection system, although they might not be practical for high loading storm events.
