Waterway Growth in the United States
Interest and activity in development of the waterways of the United States began during the colonial period, and exercised a strong influence on the establishment of this nation. Federal activity in improving waterways dates from the first sessions of the Congress; and since 1824 this work has been assigned to the Corps of Engineers of the United States Army. The first half of the nineteenth century, which may be designated as the era of state and private canal construction, witnessed important contributions to the waterways of the country and to waterway engineering.
