Devonshire Street Tunnel Underpinning—An Innovative Approach
Sydney’s Central Station is the busiest railway station in Australia. The upgrade of the 115-year-old station to incorporate Sydney’s new metro lines involves the excavation and top-down construction of a 27-m-deep station box in the heart of the operating station. This paper describes the unique underpinning design for the existing pedestrianized Devonshire Street Tunnel (DST), which allowed it to remain open to customers throughout construction of the station box. This paper aims to present the structural and geotechnical design and staged construction methodology, describe the interface between geotechnical and structural works, and discuss risks and mitigation measures adopted during design development and construction.
