Chicago's water system has developed with the growth of the city from a privately-owned water system of one pump and 2 miles of wooden pipe in 1842 to the present system, consisting of six intake cribs, 63.6 miles of water tunnels, twelve pumping stations, approximately 4,000 miles of water mains, the world's largest filtration plant serving the south one third of the city, and a larger one planned to serve the remainder of the city.
