The first paper mill in America was established in 1690 at Germantown, near Philadelphia, Pa., by William Rittenhouse. Since then the manufacture of pulp and paper has expanded until at present (l926) it constitutes one of the maior industries of the United States. Paper in various forms has come into use for so many purposes that it is now an essential necessity of domestic and industrial life, and it was so considered during the World War.
