Endangered Species along the Lower Colorado River
In 1905, a disastrous flood in California's Imperial Valley occurred when the Colorado River changed its course. This event, along with the agricultural interest's urging for a reliable year round supply of water, provided the incentive for the control and regulation of the Lower Colorado River. Including Hoover Dam, there are eight dams along the mainstem of the Lower Colorado River. Some of the dams were built for storage of Colorado River water while others are simply used for creating sufficient head for irrigation supply canals. This paper will examine the history of the dams along the Colorado River, the decisions made on allocation of its water, and the effects on habitat along the river. In addition, there will be discussion on proposed methods to restore habitat, and how these methods are being analyzed.
