Reconstruction of Runway 16L-34R at Seattle - Tacoma International Airport
The purpose of this paper is to provide insight into using a fast-track approach to runway reconstruction. Runway 16L-34R is the longest and primary runway for air operations at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (STIA). It allows large, heavy aircraft to operate when fully loaded and for all aircraft to operate during periods of inclement weather or low visibility. Originally constructed in 1942 and incrementally extended thereafter, the runway was reconstructed in 2009 using a fast track, six-month shutdown. An analysis of Runway 16L-34R rehabilitation options concluded that replacement of the entire runway airfield pavement could provide optimum flexibility throughout construction. As a result, a construction-phasing plan was developed and incorporated into the contract documents; an investigation and evaluation of material options was performed; and a constructability review was performed. This resulted in the use of a multiphased construction plan sequence that provided continuance of air operations.
