Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Hoover Dam: Highlights of the October 20-22, 2010, ASCE Hoover Dam 75th Anniversary History Symposium/Tours/Proceedings
Hoover Dam was dedicated 75 years ago by President F.D. Roosevelt on September 30, 1935, and culminated what many regard as the world's greatest dam design and construction project of the 20th Century. Hoover Dam was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1984, a National Historic Landmark in 1985, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981, and designated an ASCE Monument of the Millennium in 2000. ASCE's History and Heritage Committee formed a steering committee to coordinate, review papers, and plan an ASCE Hoover Dam 75th Anniversary History Symposium and ASCE Press Proceedings. Photographs of the October 20 Hoover Dam Tours and new Hoover Dam By-pass Bridge and highlights of the symposium will be featured at the EWRI Congress history sessions May 22–26, 2011 in Palm Springs. Hoover Dam is still the highest concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere, was the world's largest hydropower installation from 1939 to 1949, and annually produces over 4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, which still ranks it as one of the largest hydropower installations in the USA. The twenty Hoover Dam papers included in the ASCE proceedings are a wide-ranging collection that gives the reader an excellent view of the outstanding engineers and the magnificent engineering and architecture that created Hoover Dam. These symposium papers focused on the engineering associated with the design and construction of Hoover Dam, its performance over the last 75 years, and the lessons learned will be of historic value to civil engineers in the USA and internationally. The proceedings topics include: Politics, Economics, Security, Hydraulics and Structural Engineering, Architecture, Construction and Concrete. Relive the classic Hoover Dam story through the photographs and documented papers in this fast-paced presentation.
