Hospital Lifeline Response to the 1999 Izmit Turkey Earthquake

This paper describes the details of earthquake related problems of hospitals in the epicentral area, caused by the 17 August 1999 Izmit Turkey earthquake. The paper summaries the structural and lifeline damage to hospitals, and gives the damage details for several hospitals. Data is presented regarding the number of patients treated for earthquake related injuries. The location of this treatment (inside vs. outside the facilities) is discussed. Numerical data is also presented regarding earthquake-injured patients served by hospitals and evacuated from damaged hospitals. The reasons patients were evacuated from various hospitals are detailed. Comparisons are also made to hospital damage caused by the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
