An Analysis of the Cost and Description of the Methods of Mining Employed in the Marquette Iron Region, Lake Superior, Michigan
The product of the Marquette Mines has nearly doubled during the last four years, and is now about 825,000 gross tons of ore, which will yield on the average 62½ per cent. of pig iron in the furnace; hence, during the last two years, fully one-fourth of all the pig produced in this country has been from Lake Superior ores. One hundred and twenty-five furnace stacks use Lake Superior ores wholly or in part; of these, 89 employ coke or bituminous coal as fuel, 10 anthracite coal, and 26 charcoal.
