Facility Design Standardization: Six Solution Pieces and Industry Maximization Enablers
The bountiful advantages of facility standardization have been previously identified and successfully implemented by the shipbuilding and manufacturing industries. However, capital projects have been unable to achieve desired levels of standardization or reap the subsequent benefits. Here, the researchers have made an effort to help capital projects attain greater levels of standardization by better understanding and recognizing the value of standardization. This paper encapsulates that effort by summarizing six solution pieces: (1) innovative technologies and management approaches, (2) critical success factors and enablers, (3) the work process, (4) a business case analysis model, (5) a decision-making model, and (6) standardization economics. The researchers compiled these solution pieces using a mixed-methods approach. The paper also proposes industry maximization enablers that show practitioners how to achieve stepwise improvement in the implementation of standardization. The paper will contribute significantly to a better understanding of standardization strategy, as well as add to the existing literature.
