There is a remarkable parallelism between irrigation progress in the State of Victoria, Australia, and the western part of the United States. This paper traces the background of the development and the steps taken by the State of Victoria to capitalize on American talent and know-how. Major milestones in water utilization—in both legislation and construction—are briefly reviewed. The particular success of the irrigation field s surrounding the River Murray is described, as are the engineering works behind this outstanding project.
