Pipeline Planning Utilizing C/I ASCE 38-02
Design engineers are actively providing pipeline planning for a variety of projects around the world. These projects include a diverse range of pipeline types, sizes, materials, and environments. Planning includes, but is not limited to, elements of needs assessments, route selection, alignment development, evaluation of impacts, and cost estimating. One significant element of pipeline planning is the consideration of the impacts of existing subsurface utilities on route selection, alignment development, and installation costs. C/I ASCE 38-02 provides a framework for the engineer and project owner to develop a scope of work that clearly defines roles and responsibilities for the investigation of these existing utilities. This paper presents case histories where the concepts presented in this new ASCE standard were used in the planning process to the benefit of the project owner and the public.
