Effect of Waste Latex Paints on Rheological Properties of Cement Pastes: Compatibility with Water Reducers
The use of industrial by-products and wastes as raw materials for the construction industry has increased in recent years. This paper seeks to assess the effect of waste latex paint (WLP) constituents on variations in flow and rheological properties of cement pastes, including their compatibility with commonly used water reducers (WRs) and timing addition during batching. The tested WLPs were not randomly collected from waste collection sites, but rather produced and stored without biocides for approximately 6 months to expire. Test results have shown that flowability is highly affected by the WLP latex content, pigment-to-extender ratio, and percentage used for the substitution of mixing water. Mixtures prepared with WLPs added before WRs led to reduced flowability, given the competitive adsorption of the latex polymers onto cement particles. Remarkable incompatibility reflected by increased cohesiveness rates over time was noticed between WLPs and polycarboxylate-based WRs.
