Membrane Behavior of Unsaturated Bentonite Barriers
Sodium bentonite (Na-B) is used in barriers for waste containment to limit contaminant migration into the environment. The results of previous studies indicate that saturated Na-B may exhibit significant membrane behavior, i.e., solute (contaminant) restriction, thereby potentially enhancing the performance of the barrier by reducing liquid and contaminant flux. However, the influence of membrane behavior on contaminant transport is likely more significant for unsaturated conditions, such as may occur, for example, in radioactive waste disposal facilities. Therefore, an assessment of the significance of membrane behavior in unsaturated, bentonite-based barriers is being undertaken. The rationale for improved membrane behavior under unsaturated conditions and the basis for the innovative research methodology being used to quantify such behavior are described. Preliminary results supporting this rationale and methodology also are presented.
