Deflection of Plywood Beams Due to Moisture Content Change
This study was undertaken to determine reasons for the deformation of long floor panels of plywood box girder construction. Preliminary consideration revealed that the cause must be either temperature or moisture content changes. A theory was developed to show the relationship between deflection and change in temperature or moisture content for I-beams and T-beams. This development required knowledge of the relationship between length and moisture content of plywood panels. Experiments were conducted to establish this relationship for plywood of various thicknesses; and, to check the validity of the theory, experiments were also conducted to determine the deflection of beams as a function of moisture content. The results of these experiments indicate close agreement between theory and experiment limited, as may be expected, by the variation from piece to piece and from time to time of the physical characteristics of wood.
