Multiple Hazard Bridge Design
The serious consequences from the March 11th in 2011 earthquake in Japan emphasized the necessity of research into multiple hazard bridge design. However, current bridge design criteria do not consider multiple hazards. In preset paper, multiple hazard theory is introduced and the application to bridge design is investigated. Studies based on two extreme loads are performed, incorporating optimization theory, experimental verification for component multiple hazard design, vulnerability analysis, and partial failure probability. Several issues are identified. A methodology to address these issues is proposed based on load combination, optimization, and probability, with the aim to promote the concept of multiple hazard design for bridges. Finally, a numerical case is employed to illustrate the methodology.
