REPRODUKSI SIMBOLIK ARSITEKTUR TRADISIONAL JAWA : MEMAHAMI RUANG HIDUP MATERIAL MANUSIA JAWA
The idea of Javanese home (omah), as a form of traditi nal architecture that reflects Javanese culture, will be used in this paper as a standpoint to understand the symbolic reproduction of Javanese architecture. Javane people regard cosmology as an underlying value that always empower their life that any changes in it may manifest only in its forms, but not in its basic value Norms and ethics in their social interaction are positioned in the principles of togetherness, respect, and harmony. The employment of these principles in social interactions has made Javanese people open to deal with any changes. Their self-identity is expressed totally through mind and rational action. In their material life space, the identity is communicated indirectly, i.e. through certain symbols. Arguments in the following discussion are meant eventually to propose an implication that, concerning he Javanese traditional architecture, particularly Javanese people’s home or l e space, any interaction with outer influential forces demands that traditional, gen ric values and norms be negotiated continuously and experience a reproduction.
