European Railway Bridge Demography : Sustainable Bridges SB-D1.2
The data presented within this report has been collected from the 17 European railway administrations that responded to a questionnaire. The report discusses the methodology used in obtaining the data, the success in obtaining data from those requested to provide information and the reliability of the data obtained. It then goes on to present the analysed data in outline. Information is presented from more than 220,000 bridges. The data received, which geographically covers most of Europe and its major climate zones, shows that the European railway bridge stock is generally quite old and contains a mix of bridge types. The predominant type of bridge is the arch, mostly having brick construction, with lesser, but almost equal, quantities of metallic and concrete bridges. The stock also contains a smaller number of composite bridges. The majority of European railway bridges are small span (below 10m), with spans over 40m only accounting for 5% of the bridges in the survey. Most long span bridges are of metallic construction. The data gathering would not have been possible without the support of the railway undertakings who are partners in the Sustainable Bridges consortium; Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd (UK), Banverket (Sweden), Deutsche Bahn AG (Germany), RHK (Finland), Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français (France) and PKP PolskieLinie Kolejowe SA Poland). ; EC FP6, Sixth Framework Program TIP3-CT-2003-001653 ; Sustainable Bridges – Assessment for Future Traffic Demands and Longer Lives
