European Collaborative Action "Indoor Air Quality and its Impact on Man". Report No. 19. Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC) in Indoor Air Quality Investigations.
The amount of volatile organic compounds in indoor air, usually called TVOC, has been measured for various purposes using different techniques yielding different results . To increase comparability of results, the report suggests a definition of TVOC referring to a specified range of VOCs. The measured concentrations of identified VOCs within the specified range are summed up. The report discusses advantages and disadvantages of the TVOC concept with respect to exposure assessment & prediction of health effects. The report recognises that today it isn't possible to conclude that sensory effects are associated with TVOC concs., altough the likelihood of sensory effects increases with increasing TVOC concs. The report affirms the need for improved source control to diminish pollution load on indoor environments from health, comfort, energy and sustainability points of view. ; JRC.(EI)-Environment Institute
