Odefinierade platser värderas ofta negativt och förnippas frekvent med social problematik och oattraktiv utformning. Det finns dock en alternativ inställning till dessa platser. Till skillnad från många offentliga ytor som kan inrymma exkluderande och kontrollerande designelement finns odefinierade platser där olika sociala grupper kan mötas utan mallar och begränsningar. Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka odefinierade platsers eventuella sociala värde ur ett kommunalt stadsplaneringsperspektiv i Sverige och jämföra det med den alternativa inställning som presenteras i litteraturen samt med de eventuella värden som observerades vid platsstudier i Uppsala. Det kommunala stadplaneringsperspektivet erhölls genom en enkätundersökning som skickades ut till trettio kommuner i Sverige varav sju svarade. Många kommuner svarade resonerande i enkäten, men det framgick ändå tydligt av svaren att det fanns en konflikt mellan intresset att bevara de odefinierade platserna och hårda krav på exploatering. Möjlighet till spontana aktiviteteter framkom dock som ett positivt värde i enkätsvaren i likhet med resultatet av litteraturstudien. I plats- och litteraturstudier beskrevs odefinierade platser som mötesplatser mellan olika sociala grupper och som demokratiskt viktiga platser. Inga av dessa värden nämndes i enkätsvaren. En slutsats som kan dras ur denna jämförande studie är att odefinierade platser har flera viktiga sociala värden som bör diskuteras mer ingående samt beaktas vid fysisk planering trots hårt exploateringstryck. ; Undefined places are usually negatively associated with social problematics and neglected design. There is however an alternative approach to these places described by several authors within the field of urban planning and design. As opposed to many public places which can contain exclusive and controlling design, undefined places allows for different social groups to dwell in these places without restrictions and regulations. The purpose of this essay is to investigate the potential social values of undefined places in municipal urban planning in Sweden, this in comparison to the alternative opinion described in the chosen literature and to observations through field studies in Uppsala. The municipal urban planning perspective was obtained through a survey sent to thirty municipalities to which seven of them responded. The majority of the municipalities answered the questions in a discussing mode. However it became clear, judging from the responses, that there was a dispute between the preservation of undefined places and high demands on urban development. The potential for spontaneous activities to occur in these places was considered a positive value in the survey responses as well as in the result of the literature study. Undefined places were described as meeting places for different social groups as well as places significant for democracy in the results of the literature and field studies. This idea was however not represented in the responses of the survey. One conclusion of which can be drawn from this comparing study is that social values of undefined places should be considered and discussed to a higher extent in urban planning despite the intense spatial pressure in urban development.
