Pathways for the integration of urban design and infrastructure planning for sustainable urban development
Based on the reviews of the state-of-the-art in the four research areas that we describe in this report, three knowledge gaps can be highlighted: Ontological disciplinary differences of urban and transport planning have resulted in silo developments (in practice, research, education) hindering integration. Although there have been methodological developments for multimodal, intermodal and multiscalar network modelling and analysis, their empirical validation, operationalisation and application in practice, needed to handle both spatial complexity and stakeholder complexity, are largely lacking. Especially lacking is how a more integrated approach could be implemented in current formal planning processes where there seems to be occasion for major gains if this exchange could be improved. ; Pathways for the integration of urban design and infrastructure planning for sustainable urban development
