Local climate related policies in the Mediterranean region within the Covenant of Mayors Initiative
Local authorities’ efforts facing the climate challenge have been supported and endorsed by the European Commission since 2008 through the Covenant of Mayors initiative (CoM). Signatories voluntarily commit to planning and implementing sustainable energy and climate policies in their territories and reporting on their progresses. The initiative has evolved and, since 2015, the mitigation target has been increased to a reduction of 40% of CO2 by 2030 and the adaptation pillar has been integrated. Two key features characterize the composition of signatories to the CoM: population lower than 50,000 inhabitants (90%) and geographic location in Mediterranean countries regions (72%). This paper focuses on both the mitigation and adaptation pillars of the initiative and it analyses the most energy intensive sectors as well as the main hazards and vulnerabilities identified by signatories in the Mediterranean region. The data provided to the CoM by signatories belonging to the Mediterranean region is the basis of this study, whose results may contribute to increase the understanding of the strategies of cities in the region. ; JRC.C.2 - Energy Efficiency and Renewables
