Urban Digital Twins – Exploring their Potential for Climate Adaptation and Nature-based Solutions
Cities magnify climate change’s impacts both due to the population density and urban fabric. Several climate adaptation measures, such as nature-based solutions, are available to address these impacts. Additionally, digital tools have the potential to be useful to support climate adaptation measures. This thesis explores urban digital twins and their potential use for planning, implementing, and evaluating climate adaptation measures and nature-based solutions. To achieve this, the thesis comprises a literature review, nine semi-structured interviews with seven European cities with an urban digital twin, and a document analysis of these cities. The results of this thesis are that the characteristics of the urban digital twin are defined according to its purpose. Additionally, humans play a crucial role in the development and use of the urban digital twin, and it is important that the users are aware of the possible drawbacks that result from this. Lastly, the urban digital twin has the potential to support the planning and implementation of climate adaptation measures and nature-based solutions, but it is crucial that the relevant departments of the local authorities are involved in these processes.
