A place for local initiatives : An exploration of feminist spatial practice and architectural quality in the context of recovery
The thesis dwells on spatiality, the three-dimensional realm, in which we live our everyday lives and its interwoven political and architectural aspects. It explores feminist spatial practice and architectural quality and how the two perspectives may interact as a spatial approach in a situation of recovery and the context of Ukraine. The thesis is qualitative research by methods of literature study, case study research and research by design. The political situation in a society is reflected in the built structures and once built they continuously influence and affect its users, individuals and groups and direct power inequalities, social relations, possibilities and difficulties. At the same time, well-designed structures can have a great impact on the users. Built structures perceived through bodily experience can invigorate everyday life taking place. The multidimensional crisis that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is causing will have to be faced in the complex recovery. Preserving human potential and sustaining social quality will require adequate efforts on both a governmental and individual level, such as local agencies and initiatives by people. Spatial planning can be essential in that process, as it constitutes opportunities to create inclusive and resilient communities. When talking about social change the physical qualities of spaces matter.
