In a very near future, the French construction industry will go through a period of great change as environmental regulatory changes are due to come into force shortly. They will upgrade considerably the requirements on new build but also on the existing stock regarding energy efficiency and energy consumption. Building professionals have predicted a tremendous amount of work stemming from these regulations. The research investigates the business response of small and medium enterprises located in Dijon, a significant regional city of Eastern France and attempts to gather evidence of innovation within the sector. The results from the primary research, conducted through semi-structured interviews, confirm that firms are currently involved in innovation processes. The study also reveals that some tangible problems hinder the development of the Grenelle project and proposes some solutions based upon analysis of interview findings.
