Various Advanced Methods of Blade Testing for Wind Turbine
Here the main task purpose of the research done for this project is the updation of the knowledge and capabilities in the area of wind turbine blade testing. Before discussing different blade testing methods, an overview to the current wind energy technology and its history will be given. Today the re-emergence of the air as an important source of energy for the world should be placed at a critical level of development towards the end of the 20th century. If we go in the history, the first windmills were built by Persians around 900 A.D. These vertical air layers were ineffective and incomplete in absorbing wind energy and could be damaged during strong winds. These turbines were somewhat similar to the horizontal 4-bladed axis that is often associated with Holland. We see the various uses of windmills in Europe including pumping water, grain milling, wood cutting and power tools. The windmills become famous in Europe and reached their height in the 19th century just before the onset of the Industrial Revolution. At this point of time, windmill designs started including some of the same features found on modern wind turbines including yaw drive systems, air foil shaped blades and a power limiting control systems . Wind turbines have continued to evolve over the past 20 years and the overall cost of energy required to produce electricity from wind is now competitive with traditional fossil fuel energy sources. This reduction in wind energy costs is therefore the result of improved and advanced aerodynamic structures, high-quality materials, improved and renewable electronic power, advanced control techniques and solid component testing.
