Community Gardens as Social Innovations: Case Oulunkylä Community Garden
This thesis explores community gardens as a form of social innovation, focusing on historical development and current practices. Using the Oulunkylä Community Garden in Helsinki, Finland, as a case study, it examines how community gardens can enhance their operational models to better address members' needs while delivering broader societal benefits. The research is grounded in social innovation theory, emphasizing collaboration, sustainability, and transformative approaches. It employs service design methods such as collaborative workshops, interviews, and surveys to analyze member demographics, behaviors, and expectations. The findings reveal that community gardens play a dual role as spaces for fostering social connections and promoting environmental sustainability. Key strengths include a strong sense of community, effective governance, and shared values centered on nature and sustainability. However, the study also identifies challenges, such as low engagement in communal activities, communication issues, and inconsistent application of rules. Based on these insights, the thesis recommends improving inclusivity, optimizing shared resources, and strengthening collaboration with the broader community. In conclusion, the research underscores the continued relevance of community gardens as social innovations capable of addressing modern urban challenges. By adopting participatory governance, enhancing shared resources, and building stronger external partnerships, Oulunkylä Community Garden has the potential to serve as a model for sustainable and inclusive community practices.
