Chirurginio profilio slaugytojų žinių apie hospitalines infekcijas vertinimas ; The evaluation of knowledge of surgical nurses‘ about health care associated infections
Purpose of the study – to evaluate the surgical profile nurses’ knowledge about health care associated infections.A anonymous questionnaire survey was performed at Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Hospital – Kaunas Clinics urology, surgery, cardiac surgery units and the operating sections of these units. 55% respondents evaluated their knowledge about HAI as adequate. Less than two-thirds of the nurses knew correct HAI definition, which frequently was chosen by operating room nurses (79.5%; p < 0,05). Intensive care unit (61%) and surgery unit (59%) was named as higests risk units for acquiring HAI’s by all of respondents. Respondents identified surgical site (90,2%) as the most common HAI’s and the lower respiratory tract (28%) infections as the least common. Operating room nurses frequently chose devices and (or) equipment (56,4%.; p < 0,05) and ventilation and air conditioning systems (74.4%; p < 0,05) as HAI agents access ways. 97,8% of the operating and clinics nurses identify hospital staff hands as the key agents of HAI access way. More operating room nurses identified vascular catheterization (74,4%) and lung ventilation and intubation (74,4%) as risky interventions (p < 0.05). Clinics nurses frequently identified the use of disposable items (32.1%) as surgical site infections risk reducing factor, operating room nurses – adequate reusable instruments, measures disinfection and sterilization (64,1%.) and limited personnel number and movement during surgeries (46,2% ) (p <0.05). 85% of respondents recognize the need for additional knowledge and thinking that the best ways are periodic lectures by infection control specialists and regular staff training on the management of HAI.Conclusions: Surgical nurses' knowledge about the HAI is partially adequate The main attention initiate for asepsis/antiseptics, but the nurses knowledge about HAI development causes and risk factors inadequate to ensure adequate patient care on HAI prevention aspect.
