Lean Life Cycle Process Mapping in Digital Twins for the Construction Industry
The use of lean life cycle process mapping in digital twins in the construction industry is an area of growth as technology improves opening up more areas for potential development. However, knowledge on what currently exists and what could be is currently unknown. The literature review showed potential for both the digital twin and the lean process mapping side. Nevertheless, it presented very limited information as to what the details of combining these areas would look like and what would be necessary to overcome to make it possible. The industrial review consisted of interviewing industry to find what was currently happening and what are the barriers to further improvement. As well as this, key areas necessary for future developments to meet to be successful in implementation were also highlighted. This allowed comparison with the results found from the literature review to suggest a proposed method forfuture developments. The study is found that the main three barriers against implementing lean life cycle process mapping in digital twins in the construction industry are: a lack of education, a lack of suitable technology found in use in day-to-day life and a lack of standards. The second finding of this study is the rationale behind suggesting utilising Kanban in combination with the lean methodology to be themost beneficial system to use in lean life cycle process mapping system within it is in the construction industry. These findings contribute to existing knowledge as this is an area with limited research completed inits. As well as this, they a highlight the areas necessary for improvement to give potential development in lean life cycle process mapping in digital twins in the construction industry.
