Flooding and Climate Justice : An Examination of Vulnerability, Adaptation, and Equity in a Swedish Municipality
This study examines the integration of climate justice within flood adaptation strategies in Gävle, a Swedish municipality challenged by climatic changes. The study critically examines the municipality's response to the environmental challenges posed by increased flooding, particularly its strategies to address the needs and vulnerabilities of disadvantaged groups. Utilizing a case study approach, the study assesses whether the local government's flood response efforts embed a climate-just approach, focusing on the equity of participatory processes and resource distribution. The findings highlight disparities in the consideration and inclusion of socio-economically vulnerable groups in climate adaptation planning and execution. The thesis contributes to the broader discourse on climate justice by illustrating the complexities and challenges of implementing equitable climate adaptation strategies in Gävle as a municipality in northern Europe.
