The thermal envelope house is the product of an innovative approach to energy efficient design. Known also as envelope, double envelope and double shell houses, these buildings are intended to provide architecturally pleasing spaces and a high degree of comfort while minimizing heating costs. The purpose of this note is to describe the construction and operation of this type of home and the advantages and limitations of the approach. ; La maison à enveloppe thermique, mise au point dans les années 1970 aux États-Unis, est le résultat d'une façcon nouvelle d'aborder la conception de maisons à bon redement énergétique. Appelés également maisons à double enveloppe, ces bâtiments sont conçus de façon à offrir un espace architectural agréable et un confort thermique supérieur tout en réduisant les coûts de chauffage.
