BEGINNING THE JOURNEY TOWARDS PROJECT EXCELLENCE - Current state of financial performance, project reviews and success factors
The Master’s Thesis is an assignment within a development program in a globally operating industrial company in the pulp and paper technology sector. The development program aims to develop the company’s project management capabilities with focus on health, safety & environment (HSE), project execution & site activities and financial follow-up of major service projects. The motivation for the development of project management practices is seen to arise from the increasing demands of customers, more complex and broader scoped projects and high competition in the market place. Through the theoretical basis focusing on project success criteria and project success factors, a high level hierarchical model for overall project success was created and a list of twenty most frequently mentioned success factors was identified. The thesis was carried out as a case study with an action science approach, including continuous interaction and participation in the development program activities and also authentic project management related activities in the different business areas of the company. Focus for the empirical part was aimed at three areas: identifying improvement areas in project review practices, analyzing the financial performance of selected projects and studying the perceived importance and occurrence of the project success factors. Observation of the project review practices brought insight about the current project success paradigm in the case company. The current practices in project reviews was identified to emphasize the expected gross margin while actually lacking a proactive approach to managing the success factors that lead to overall project success. These observations lead to more detailed analysis of project financial performance, through which systematic budget deviations were identified in several areas. The survey revealed inconsistencies between different stakeholders with regards to the current practices of project management and assessment of project success. Finally, the surveyed perceived importance and occurrence of the selected success factors enabled creating a framework for further assessment of different stakeholder’s perceptions on project success. The resulting managerial implications summarize the recommendations for guiding the beginning of the journey towards project excellence. ; fi=Opinnäytetyö kokotekstinä PDF-muodossa.|en=Thesis fulltext in PDF format.|sv=Lärdomsprov tillgängligt som fulltext i PDF-format|
