Impacts Of Recently Developed Squatter Settlements Transformation Projects On Urban Heat Islands: A Comperative Study In The City Of Ankara
Urban redevelopment projects, in various scalesand scopes, have recently emerged as major operations that have (re)shapedurban fabric of Turkish cities. The city of Ankara, being the capital ofTurkey, has dramatically experienced urban redevelopment projects includingsquatter settlement transformation that has raised large scale clearances andconstructions in different parts of the city.Squatter settlements, lacking of infrastructure and basic urbanservices, were replaced by residential blocks. The newly proposed housingdevelopment has been raised as a model with upgraded infrastructure, designed landscapeand paved roads; and quickly became an ideal for all squatter settlements inTurkey. However, the effect of these newly developed residential districts onurban heat island (UHI) has been rarely discussed. In this regard, this paperintends to discuss the impacts of the urban transformation projects on urbanclimate by particularly focusing on Yeni Mamak housing development district inAnkara. The paper will be grounded on a comparative study based on the formerand current settlement fabric of the area. In doing so, it is intended toreveal the critical role of the newly developed housing areas in mitigating theimpacts of the UHI.
