Moral Education in Contemporary China: Cultivating Character through Ideology
This dissertation explores the intersection of traditional and modern perspectives in the field of moral education in China, with the objective of clarifying the correlation between practical classroom dynamics and the underlying ideological framework. Utilizing sociological theories, the study examines sociocultural factors influencing the educational environment and their impact on students' experiences, especially the teacher-student dynamic. The central argument posits that outdated pedagogical methods hinder the effective integration of moral education into China's educational system by inadequately addressing the diverse experiences and viewpoints of Chinese students. Consequently, this poses significant challenges for educators who aim to align their classroom practices with the overarching ideological framework. The study explores the impact of institutional authorities, social norms, and the prevailing ideological framework on curricula and textbooks, with a special focus on the subject of ``Morality and the Rule of Law'', highlighting their crucial role in classroom setting and teaching opportunities. It aims to enhance the understanding of Chinese society and its educational institutions, with an emphasis on moral development and its broader societal implications. This research contributes to the largely theoretical literature by examining the perspectives of educators, revealing the efficacy of moral education in China, identifying variances in views among educators and parents, and highlighting the need for fostering critical thinking abilities in students. Ultimately, it underscores educators' dual role of supporting government policies and guiding students towards alignment with the ideology of the Communist Party of China, all while promoting independent thinking. It stresses the crucial task of academic institutions in striking a balance between collective values and individual thought to cultivate globally competent citizens. Cultivating character through ideology, the study concludes, is found ...
