Catastrophic Natural Disaster, Technology and Sustainable Development of Nigeria
Disasters such as floods, landslides, tidal waves, coastal erosion, sand-storms, dust-storms, locust/insect infestations, oil spillage and other man-made disasters have claimed many lives in Nigeria and rendered many homeless. This paper looks at the use of space technology in disaster monitoring and management for sustainable development in Nigeria. First, it examined economic development in Nigeria and the economic and social effects of natural disasters. This is followed by an examination of Nigeria’s Space Programme and the application of space technology in disaster monitoring and management. The paper observes that Nigeria lacks the most basic standards of disaster risk prevention, management and reduction and it is a subject that has received considerable attention. Its space resources have not properly been utilized; this resulted in the impact of the natural disasters that ravaged the country. For Nigeria as a nation to achieve sustainable development, there is need to increase the inherent strength and capabilities of all agencies, including the communities to deal with disaster situations. In addition, the relevant space agency should always be ready to make available images covering the whole country at no cost to facilitate disaster prediction and management.
