The essay analyzes, in its essential features, the particular attention that the Roman architectural context, during the last century, has reserved for the quality of the urban space in relation to the project. An attention that since the first decade of the 1900s has seen the tought of figures such as Giovannoni, Piacentini, and a substantial part of the school of architecture in Rome, which saw them among the founders, confronting the theme. In particular, from the immediate post-war period, architects with a marked aptitude for theoretical reflection such as Saverio Muratori, Ludovico Quaroni, and later Carlo Aymonino have, in different ways, tackled the question by trying to understand the profound nature of urban phenomena and trying to reconstruct the logic of their transformation. Giving origin, as in the case of Muratori, to a school that has developed an effective method of reading the urban fabrics in their historical transformation. This sensitivity to the characteristics and quality of urban space, which over time has defined a concept of the project that always responds to the logic of the context, seems to have weakened in recent years. This appears as a sign of a withdrawal that is an indication of a more general cultural and identity crisis, in which architecture is no longer seen as a positive tool for the transformation of physical space.
