Safe and inclusive housing for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender older adults
Age-Friendly is an initiative that has been adopted by both the Province of Manitoba and City of Winnipeg, and asserts the importance of recognizing and respecting the great diversity of older persons; promoting their inclusion and contributions; and responding to their needs and preferences. Despite its commitment to be responsive to a heterogeneous older adult population, older LGBT* adults’ needs remain invisible within Age-Friendly discourses. To address this gap, the current study explored the housing experiences of 13 LGBT* older adults, a key domain of the Age-Friendly initiative, and a space research has demonstrated to be unsafe and marginalizing for sexual and gender minorities. Findings from this study emphasize the need to create space where older LGBT* adults can live authentically and without fear of stigma or being different, and offers suggestions to make this possibility a reality. ; May 2018
