Urban loops of play, analysing the children network and play spaces in the city of Barcelona
This thesis investigates how to enhance the interaction between children and the urban environment of Barcelona by utilizing public play spaces, improving children’s routes with using the schoolyards. By addressing these topics through the lens of children’s needs, this thesis examines the requirements for a child-friendly network and its spatial characteristics. It explores how these elements can be improved in two school areas in Barcelona, offering insights into urban planning strategies that can foster engaging and inclusive play areas in an increasingly digital and urbanized world. Moreover, it highlights the need for spatial solutions beyond traditional playgrounds, considering a variety of interventions across different scales to meet the diverse needs of children. Key design elements, such as visibility, accessibility, natural features, and diverse play opportunities, are essential for creating outdoor play areas that encourage exploration and active engagement. The integration of connected play spaces promotes accessibility and enhances the user experience, enriching children’s interaction with their environment.
