Nordic Cities and GHG Emissions Reduction : Aligning with the UNFCCC COP29 Mitigation Work Programme for Climate-Resilient Urban Development
Cities contribute to 70% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, driven by rapid urbanization and infrastructure expansion. By 2050, cities will house 70% of the global population, making sustainable construction essential. This report, presented at COP29, explores key solutions for reducing urban emissions through spatial planning, low-carbon infrastructure, electrification, green/blue infrastructure, and the circular economy. Insights from 500+ stakeholders across the Nordics emphasize both challenges and opportunities in achieving deep decarbonization. The report provides recommendations for policymakers to advance sustainable urban development, aligned with the Nordic Vision 2030.
