Assessment Tool for Energy Efficient Refurbishment of Existing Buildings
The SHERIFF research project is developing an assessment tool for energy efficient refurbishment of residential buildings. The goal is to design an efficient technical tool, to help the homeowner make the decision on which of the various improvement solutions are more appropriate. This project is funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and within the INNPACTO program. The current rehabilitation systems on the market are being applied regardless of the thermal behaviour of the existing building. This assessment tool allows selecting the most appropriate intervention on the facade taking into account: envelope needs depending on weather conditions, the location of the building on the site, the building type and composition of the existing facade construction, the compliance with the minimum requirements specified by the Spanish Technical Building Code. In the first stage of the project, a study period has been selected to develop an inventory of building typologies. That has allowed characterizing the facades of existing buildings and evaluated their thermal behaviour. At the same time, the climatic features of the main Spanish cities have been analysed and the dimensions of shading for each orientation defined. Depending on the orientation, the road section and latitude, the facade will be divided in different areas: solar gain zone, sun protection zone, shade exposure zone and flexible zone (their characteristics vary during the day in spring and autumn). For each zone, different refurbishment strategies are defined: shading, thermal insulation, replacement of windows, etc. There are on-going energy simulations of the selected building types. These simulations assess the impact of the proposed strategies in the existing building prior to performing any work on the building. Subsequently, the cost of interventions is assessed to extract data from the amortization of the rehabilitation and then evaluate which of the various solutions for improvement are most appropriate.
