Eine Plattform für die Wissenschaft: Bauingenieurwesen, Architektur und Urbanistik
This project proposes a library that integrates the Asplund library, its annex buildings, and Observatorielunden. The new library will connect these elements, creating new spaces while relieving the Asplund library so it can function as originally intended. The design respects and merges with the existing architecture without overshadowing or compromising it. Positioned behind, merged, and alongside the existing structures, the new library emerges as an independent entity with its own architectural expression. The aim is to revitalize the site and annex buildings, integrating them with the city library and connecting the city with Observatorielunden. The proposal envisions a new terracing of the hill and park environment, creating a cohesive unit with the new library. The proposed library is 60% smaller in total area compared to the competition's winning proposal. This reduction was necessary to respect and preserve key site elements, which could not be achieved with the original program's size. The decision to reduce certain parts of the program was a critical trade-off to implement a proposal that honors the existing architecture and site context.
