EVALUATION OF BITUMEN EMULSION TECHNOLOGY FOR PAVING FLEXIBLE ROADS & MAINTENANCE ACTIVITY A Case Study in Addis Ababa City
Bitumen emulsion mixture is the process of intensive mixing between water, bitumen and their binder, i.e. a certain solvent or surfactant. Although this process is complex and needs advanced technology, its advantage over hot mix asphalt weights more. As a result, it became more common in road construction. The overall aim of this project work is to assess the possible application of bitumen emulsion in paving the Addis Ababa city gravel roads and using it in asphalt road maintenance activities. To study the suitability of Bitumen Emulsion for road construction, Modified Marshal Stability Test is carried out to investigate the stability value, flow value and optimum binder content. Particularities of emulsion can also be discussed from the other important mixing type, from cutback asphalt point of view. For instance, it’s known that both emulsion and cutback bitumen need kerosene as a solvent but the amount needed for emulsion is much less in quantity saving excess cost. Evaluating safety wise, emulsion process causes less risk on the experts during application process since it is water based process. In addition, emulsified bitumen is neutral against atmospheric pollution. In the evaluation process, the stability value of the emulsion test is found to be 11.4kN at 9% emulsion content
