Decent work in textiles and garment production
Die Dissertation untersucht die Herausforderung menschenwürdiger Arbeitsbedingungen in globalen Bekleidungs- und Textillieferketten aus der Perspektive der Zulieferer im Globalen Süden. Im theoretischen Teil der Arbeit wird ein Crossvergenz-Ansatz für das Verständnis und die Analyse der Entstehung (un)menschenwürdigen Arbeitspraktiken entwickelt. Die empirische Analyse untersucht Arbeitspraktiken in Textil- und Bekleidungsfabriken in Ägypten sowie in Tier-1- und Tier-2-Bekleidungsfabriken in Jordanien. Die Ergebnisse beleuchten (1) glo-kale Einflussfaktoren (un)menschenwürdiger Arbeit sowie deren Interaktion, (2) die Bedeutung humaner, intellektueller, physischer und finanzieller Ressourcen und (3) kognitive Bezugsrahmen ("frames"), die das Verständnis von menschenwürdiger Arbeit prägen. Im Schlussteil der Arbeit werden spezifische Vorschläge für die Förderung menschenwürdiger Arbeit in globalen Lieferketten abgeleitet. ; The thesis explores the challenge of achieving decent work in global garment and textiles production from the perspective of suppliers in the Global South. The theoretical part of the thesis develops a crossvergence framework for understanding and analysing the emergence of (in)decent work practices. The empirical analysis focuses on textiles and garment suppliers in Egypt and tier-1 and tier-2 garment suppliers in Jordan. The findings illuminate (1) glo-cal decent work determinants and their interaction, (2) the importance of human, intellectual, physical, and financial resources of suppliers, and (3) cognitive decent work frames of decision-makers. Based on the findings, the thesis proposes a redistribution of roles and responsibilities in the quest for decent work. It emphasises the importance of glo-cal initiatives, like the Better Work country programs, as well as the obligation of the Global North to ensure responsible purchasing practices of brands and retailers.
