Lateral stability of road tankers : Vol 1. Main report. (with Swedish summary: Tankfordons sidstabilitet)
The influence from large amplitude sloshing on the overturning and skidding stability of road tankers has been experimentally quantified. Liquid force measurements in laterally oscillated model tanks were evaluated by simplified vehicle models in hybrid computer. The experimental technique is described in detail. Remarkable deteriorations of the cornering capacity due to dynamic liquid motions were found for partly loaded tanks. short lateral distance between vertical cross walls is recommended: 0.6 or less. previous suggestion on steady-state overturning limit of minimum m/s2 tested in full scale by static tilt is discussed for road tankers as well.
