Global Polio Eradication Initiative : annual report 2012
he year 2012 marked the final year of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) Strategic Plan 2010- 2012 and gave birth to an emergency approach to finish polio eradication. At the beginning of the Plan three years ago, polio was rampant across 23 countries and more than 1,500 children were paralysed for life that year. The disease was widespread across the remaining endemic countries. Re-established transmission of poliovirus was continuing in four countries.
