Intelligent vattendesign : utformning av Gjutarplan i Kallhälls centrum ; Intelligent water design
The thesis aims to be an informative study for landscape architects and hopes to contribute to an understanding of ways water can be used and managed at sites lacking open, green surfaces. The title "intelligent water design" should evoke the reader’s thoughts concerning intelligent aspects of water. Text, images and the design proposition give hints about these aspects. In the first part of this thesis, various examples of water design are presented. The chosen examples are all applicable in urban environments with a high percentage of impervious surfaces. The second part examines Gjutarplan, an urban square in the centre of Kallhäll, in Järfälla, north of Stockholm. Gjutarplan is first framed in a geographical and historical context. The site is further explained through several site analysis and diagrams which are then distilled into drafts and design goals. Two such goals are the elucidation of the entrance space surrounding the square and improved accessibility on and around the square. The proposed design scheme is presented in the final part, explained through plans, sections, and perspectives. Today, the centre of Kallhäll is a small suburban centre with a population density that does not support the need of the businesses in the area. Gjutarplan was built in the mid seventies and no major changes have been made since then. It is now time to decide the future appearance and function of the centre. The end goal of this thesis is to propose a carefully considered design for Gjutarplan and its adjacent surfaces. The process of research and analysis of the square and its environs through the intelligent use of water has informed the generation of a design that offers opportunities for a more vibrant, healthy square life.
