Das Elbeästuar
The shape and the use of the river Elbe with respect to traffic and the ports, especially the Port of Ham-burg and its artificial connections (canals) is described. A short view is given on the Elbe’s geomorphological development and classification. The major aspects of this article are on the one hand the hydrological key parameters as fresh water discharge, tides, water levels, currents, salinity and suspended load (also their development over the years) and on the other hand the construction measures in the river for navigational purposes with their resolving problems with dredging large amounts of sediment.
