Heritage Building as Passive House
The former headquarters of the tyre company Armstrong Rubber in New Haven can hardly be overlooked. In 1969 the brutalist building was completed according to plans by Marcel Breuer and Robert Gatje next to the highway access to the city . The steel frame structure and its facade consisting of prefabricated concrete elements were designed to be seen from afar. A five storey office structure seemingly floats above a two storey base, originally built for research laboratories and production facilities. The floor slabs of the floating structure are suspended from steel trusses that are located in the rooftop storey.
Der ehemalige Hauptsitz des Reifenherstellers Armstrong Rubber in New Haven ist kaum zu übersehen: 1969 wurde das brutalistische Gebäude nach Plänen von Marcel Breuer und Robert Gatje an der Autobahnzufahrt in die Stadt fertiggestellt. Der Stahlskelettbau mit Betonfertigteil-Fassade ist sichtlich auf Fernwirkung hin angelegt: Über einem zweigeschossigen Sockel, einst für Forschungslabore und Produktionsanlagen genutzt, schwebt ein fünfgeschossiger Büroblock. Seine Geschossdecken hängen an Stahlfachwerkträgern im Dachgeschoss des Hauses.
